Heterosexism, the discrimination or prejudicial treatment against homosexual believing that heterosexuality is the normal sexual orientation. LGBT(Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual) community has suffered from heterosexism for many decades. This is growing rapidly around the country. Homosexuals have been excluded from jobs, denied benefits, discriminated at school, discriminated within their religion, not being accepted in their town or country and in public places in general. As evidence suggests the LGBT community suffers from many problems ranging from mental health to suicidal thoughts and laws that are for them but also against them. The six sources I examined on this topic enhanced each other on several aspects. The first way they collaborated with each other was the causes and effect of being discriminated in the LGBT community, and the effects it has on their mental and physical health. Paul Berrin and Meagan Sutter (2015) complied an article â€Å"Discrimination, Mental Health, and Suicidal Ideation among LGBT People of Color†. This study illuminates the effects of discrimination mentally and physically on individuals who are homosexuals and of different ethnicities. The results correlated to the concept that discrimination on the LGBT community â€Å"has consistently [been] a major stressor with adverse psychological effects† (Berrin Sutter, p.1). This is a shame because Berrin and Sutter (2015) point that the majority of the LGBT community that comes out experience

The History of Video Recorders and Television

Charles Ginsburg led the research team at Ampex Corporation in developing one of the first practical videotape recorders or VTRs in 1951. It captured live images from television cameras by converting the information into electrical impulses and saving the information on magnetic tape. By 1956, VTR technology was perfected and in common use by the television industry. But Ginsburg wasn’t done yet. He led the Ampex research team in developing a new machine that could run the tape at a much slower rate because the recording heads rotated at high speed. This allowed the necessary high-frequency response. He became known as the father of the video cassette recorder.†Ã‚  Ampex sold the first VTR for $50,000 in 1956, and the first VCassetteRs -- or VCRs -- were sold by Sony in 1971. The Early Days of Video Recording Film was initially the only medium available for recording television programs -- magnetic tape was considered, and it was already being used for sound, but the greater quantity of information carried by the television signal demanded new studies. A number of American companies began investigating this problem during the 1950s.   Tape Recording Technology Audio and video magnetic recording have had a greater impact on broadcasting than any other development since the invention of radio/TV transmission itself. Videotape in a large cassette format was  introduced by both JVC and Panasonic around 1976. This was the most popular format for home use and for video store rentals for many years until it was replaced by CDs and DVDs. VHS stands for Video Home System. The First Television Cameras American engineer, scientist and inventor Philo Taylor Farnsworth devised the television camera in the 1920s, although he would later declare that theres nothing on it worthwhile. It was an â€Å"image dissector† that converted a captured imagine into an electrical signal. Farnsworth was born in 1906 on Indian Creek in Beaver County, Utah.  His parents expected him to become a concert violinist but his interests drew him to experiments with electricity. He built an electric motor and produced the first electric washing machine his family ever owned at the age of 12. He then went on to attend Brigham Young University where he researched television picture transmission. Farnsworth had already conceived of his idea for television while in high school, and he cofounded Crocker Research Laboratories in 1926 which he later renamed Farnsworth Television, Inc. He then changed the name again to Farnsworth Radio and Television Corporation in 1938. Farnsworth was the first inventor to transmit a television image comprised of 60 horizontal lines in 1927. He was only 21 years old. The image was a dollar sign. One of the keys to his success was the development of the  dissector tube that essentially translated images into electrons that could be transmitted to a TV. He filed for his first television patent in 1927. He had already won an earlier patent for his image dissection tube, but he lost later patent battles to RCA, which owned the rights to many of inventor  Vladimir Zworkyin’s  TV patents. Farnsworth went on to invent over 165 different devices. He held over 300 patents by the end of his career, including a number of significant television patents -- although he was not a fan of what his discoveries had wrought. His final years were spent battling depression and alcohol. He died on March 11, 1971, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Digital Photography and Video Stills Digital camera technology is directly related to and evolved from the same technology that once recorded  television  images. Both television/video cameras and digital cameras use a CCD or charged coupled device to sense light color and intensity. A still video or digital camera called the Sony Mavica single-lens reflex was first demonstrated in 1981. It used a fast-rotating magnetic disc that was two inches in diameter and could record up to 50 images formed in a solid-state device inside the camera. The images were played back through a television receiver or monitor, or they could be printed out. Advancements in Digital Technology   NASA converted from using analog to digital signals with their space probes to map the surface of the moon in the 1960s, sending digital images back to earth. Computer technology was also advancing at this time and NASA used computers to enhance the images that the space probes were sending.  Digital imaging had another government use at the time – in spy satellites. Government use of digital technology helped advance the science of digital imaging, and the private sector also made significant contributions. Texas Instruments patented a filmless electronic camera in 1972, the first to do so. Sony released the Sony Mavica electronic still camera in August 1981, the first commercial electronic camera. Images were recorded onto a mini disc and placed into a video reader that was connected to a television monitor or color printer. The early Mavica cannot be considered a true digital camera, however, even though it started the digital camera revolution. It was a video camera that took video freeze-frames. The First Digital Cameras   Since the mid-1970s, Kodak has invented several solid-state image sensors that convert  light to digital pictures for professional and home consumer use. Kodak scientists invented the worlds first megapixel sensor in 1986, capable of recording 1.4 million pixels that could produce a 5 x 7-inch digital photo-quality print. Kodak released seven products for recording, storing, manipulating, transmitting and printing electronic still video images in 1987, and in 1990, the company developed the Photo CD system and proposed the first worldwide standard for defining color in the digital environment of computers and computer peripherals. Kodak released the first professional digital camera system (DCS), aimed at photojournalists in 1991, a Nikon F-3 camera equipped with a 1.3-megapixel sensor. The first digital cameras for the consumer  market that would work with a home computer via a serial cable were the Apple QuickTake camera in 1994, the Kodak DC40 camera in 1995, the Casio QV-11 also in 1995, and Sonys Cyber-Shot Digital Still Camera in 1996. Kodak entered into an aggressive co-marketing campaign to promote its DC40 and to help introduce the idea of digital photography to the public. Kinkos and Microsoft both collaborated with Kodak to create digital image-making software workstations and kiosks which allowed customers to produce photo CD discs and add digital images to documents. IBM collaborated with Kodak in making an Internet-based network image exchange. Hewlett-Packard was the first company to make color inkjet printers that complemented the new digital camera images. The marketing worked and now digital cameras are everywhere.

Bill Gates along with his friend Paul Allen had dropped out of Harvard to create this venture In March 1986, Microsoft was listed for initial public offering (IPO) for $21 per share, and this step of taking the company public made him a millionaire when he was just 31 years old. At this time the worth of the company was $520 m illion and Gates held 45 percent of the company's share. He had gained recognition as a remarkable leader and exceptional. He has inspired a lot of people to dream big and achieve heights in life. In this assignment the leadership and entrepreneur traits of Bill Gates are going to be discussed (Forbes.com, 2018). Brief history Bill Gates was born in 1955 in Seattle to a culturally and financially rich family; he was always an ambitious young man who was hard working and far-sighted. He was enrolled in Harvard law school where he dropped out in order to develop Microsoft; his vision was to create a solution software that was compatible to be used for universal purposes. He was passionate about computer systems and information technology; he used to hack servers easily of the Computer Center Corporation where he and his friend were allowed to carry out their experiments. After they had hacked their systems they were not allowed in the campus for weeks (Patel, 2017). In 1970 when the organisation was bankrupt the students working for the organisation lost their jobs along with many other officials. But talent finds its way and he had got opportunity to showcase his talent and carry out his experiments. In 1975 Paul Allen and Bill Gates founded Microsoft. The company started facing difficulties but by the end of the second year the company had 13 members and the sales reached new milestones. Since then the exceptional visionary leadership of Gates and his knowledge helped him take the company to new achievements making him the richest man at the age of 39. He has been on and off the top position but has been consistent on the list (Elkins, 2018). By the time he was in college he had made up his mind regarding his future and he had his vision set on the goal for his future. He had spent a lot of time learning the computer languages and programming, which he later turned into an empire of opportunities (Forbes.com, 2018). He was not scared of hard work, he was focused and learned whenever he failed he had spent time understanding and learning his shortcoming so that he could maintain the position of being at the top of the game. It is a common saying that it is easy to reach the top but it is difficult to maintain the position. Encouraged by his passion for learning computer science he worked hard to develop his skill sets and expertise (Patel, 2017). Gates spent years, programming and developing coding, and finding solutions that could address the problems that were being faced on a global platform. Even after the establishment and success of the company he continued to work hard and equally encourage the employees of the company to achieve their goals and objectives. He wanted his employees to share his own passion for the product and the service that the company was offering the clients and in order to deliver a quality product hard work was inevitable (Elkins, 2018). He had vision for the company and he always thought in the long term process, though the objective of the company is set in a short term basis but he always had a far sighted strategy in the management of the business which made the company successful. In terms of the barriers and the challenges that he had faced in the course of this tenure, he assured the company combated the risk and grow in the due course. According to Gates it is very important to have a clear goal in business as well as in life, if the destination is clear then the path towards the destination can be achieved. Setting milestones and yardstick measures helps in identifying the achievements and failures (Ward, 2017). Bill Gates was advised by another popular leader Warren Buffett to learn to say No, he has taken that advise and has shared it with others in several interviews, it is important for entrepreneur to say No at times, it is important to take decisions and in the process he or she should ensure that they do not agree to everything rather use their analytical skills to understand the situation (Ward, 2017). He is also a risk taker form a very young age he has established that he is not afraid to take risk in order to pursue his passion; he has shown several examples of his risk taking trait in the time he was heading the management of Microsoft (Rampton, 2016). He is determined and is driven by passion, he does not leave any of these tasks undone or incomplete, and he faces failure with positivity and takes it as a learning experience. He is also pragmatic in nature which makes him a successful person (Ward, 2017). About the company Microsoft was established as a software developmentcompany in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. The company was established with the vision of providing common people a platform of software that was easy to use and could be adapted by people easily. The company initially faced a number of barriers in the process of operation and product development there were several security issues in the prototype and then there was issues with sales in the first few years of operation (Rampton, 2016). The losses of the company was enormous this was due to the issue of piracy where people could easily copy the software instead of buying it form the company. This is an illegal act but the company there was no way that the company could track it hence they had to evolve the technology and build a security system that could not be imitated. During this time he had pleaded the government to provide rights for software as well like music or art. In 1977, the company earned around $500,000 dollars with strength of 13 people in the organisation. The operations of the business were divided in RD and business administration while Paul Allen was the one responsible for RD, Gates managed the administration of the business. Facing a lot of ups and down in the process of business operation the company in 1986, was listed for public with $21 which grew to $28 dollars in a day. In 1993, the company reached another milestone of being the most popularly used operating system in the world. He stepped down from his position in 2008 (Rampton, 2016). As the leader of a cutting edge organization Gates ensured to take care of his employees, he encouraged innovation and creative liberty among his employees, he motivated the people to work hard and share his passion and love for the company. He ensured the issues and grievances of the people are taken seriously and worked upon. He focused on generating job satisfaction by allowing people space in the work environment (Ward, 2017). Identification of the process As Gates and Allen were both passionate about the computer sciences and spent most of their student days learning and developing programs and technology they had a fair idea about the contemporary changes and innovations that were taking place in the industry, they had realized a scope of a software that could be used by the common people which was user friendly. The far-sighted, pragmatic nature of Gates drove him to grab the opportunity and build an entity around the product and the services (Ward, 2017). Challenges and barriers faced by Bill Gates There were a number of issues that was faced by the duo, firstly they had to engaged in a lot of learning process before developing a satisfactory product. The reason why I picked these poems is that these poems all are very touching to many peoples feelings as they all give the reader great description of what the places may look or feel like. The poems are Composed Upon Westminster Bridge by William Wordsworth, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost, The Barn by Seamus Heaney. The first poem that I am going to examine is Composed Upon Westminster Bridge. William Wordsworth was a Romantic poet. The poem is set in the early morning where there is no hustle, bustle and noise. In this poem Wordsworth has written about London in the nineteenth century. He makes it clear that the sleeping city viewed in the early morning sunlight is as beautiful as that of a natural landscape. He tries to make it clear to us that nothing could compare to this scene and anyone who thinks otherwise is a dull person. At that time London was the centre of Europe, if not the world. In his poetry, he is a poet of primary and natural things. In lines nine and ten Never did sun more beautifully steep in his first splendour, valley, rock or hill. He tries to tell us that the sun never shone more beautifully over the rocks of the country-side than in London and that the city is as beautiful or if not even more beautiful than the country side. He makes it clear that this is a very positive experience of his. In the last few lines, we see the poets emotions. Glittering in the smokeless air suggests that he can see the whole city clearly and I think this is why he was able to see the beauty of the architecture and be able to write about it in this poem. As Wordsworths poem holds a great deal of atmosphere so does the poem written by Robert Frost, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. This poem is set in woods covered in snow. The characters location during the poem is between a farmhouse and a frozen lake. The poem is consists of four quatrains. The man in the poem is accompanied by his little horse; apart from the horse, he is totally alone. He makes it clear in line three that he doesnt want to be seen; this is because he is trespassing on another persons land. The poem was written around the 21st of December. We get this evidence from line eight; The darkest evening of the year. The woods are dark and deep almost death-like. The poet momentarily toys with the idea of death; he almost has to convince himself that life must go on. I think he may have been considering suicide. Many the elements in the poem point towards death for example the woods would only seem attractive to someone who wants to die because there is no warmth in the woods on a snowy evening. He decides to go on with his busy life and fulfil his human duties. In the last three lines But I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep/ and miles to go before I sleep it seems that he snaps out of his daydream and prepares to go on home. This is a pretty complex poem as he may not have been in the woods at all. The poets descriptions of things in the poem are exceptional. Of easy wind and downy flake gives us a clear image of the bitter coldness with flakes of snow falling. This poem has a much more pleasant atmosphere than the last poem. Which seems to hold a lot of bad memories for the author. The Barn was written by Seamus Heaney. Heaneys first collections of poems are about things that have happened to him and around him as a child growing up on a farm. The poem is about a fearful childhood experience of his. This fearful experience has stayed with him for some time as he was in his middle twenties when he wrote about it. The atmosphere in this poem is a threatening one. Heaneys descriptive language of writing in this poem is delightful. He describes the bags of corn as solid as cement. Threshed corn lay piled like grit of ivory or solid as cement in two lugged sacks. He explains that the corn lies like the grit of ivory meaning that he thinks the corn is lose as grit and the colour of ivory. The corn either lay loose or in sacks. The sacks are usually made of very tough material. The sacks have two hoops like ears on either side of the sacks and described by Heaney as lugged. The place was not pleasant: chilly concrete. All the stanzas sum into one other, which is known as enjambment. In line three he mentioned hoarded and armoury. Hoarded means to store and armoury gives us a sense of war or threat. He makes it clear that inside the barn is very dark, dusty, and clausterfobic. By the end of the third stanza we realise that the barn frightened him as a child. He refers to the clogging of cobwebs blocking up your lungs and the staring of bats at him as their bright eyes stared into his nightmare. He sees himself being chaffed/packed up by the birds mentioned as predators. The fear of the unknown can play on the mind and lead to a nightmare. In this case Seamus Heaney is the victim. A lot of these things that he has had nightmares over are in fact just lifeless objects within the barn. To conclude I personally feel that William Wordsworth has created an atmosphere and has communicated it to us the reader the best. However Frost and Heaney have made very good attempts.
